5 Ways to Rescue Problematic Skin

Since I was 13 my skin has given me SO much trouble. I am that oily girl who is also extremely acne prone, and by acne I don’t mean one or two breakouts, I mean severe ¬†breakouts. I have been in and out of a few dermatologist’s office’s for almost 10 years. I have taken accurtane which if you don’t know, that is a very harsh medication that people with sever acne take but the side effects were crazy. The last experience I had with a skin medication I ended up being severely allergic to and it landed me a spot in the ER ¬†with severe stomach pain. Red, burning hives were basically my life off and on for 2 months, they would go away and then they would fade and come back within a few days. I was miserable. I visited a new dermatologist because my original dermatologist refused to see me. Long story short, they figured it out and my skin still hates me. What’s a girl to do?

The last few weeks I’ve noticed my skin looking far less than its best, I had my skin under control and then out of nowhere the acne came creeping out like a ninja in the night. Of course I came to the conclusion that it was my diet of strictly tacos and chicken nuggets. I decided that I needed to leave the tacos and nuggets behind and start eating cleaner and taking vitamins. After doing some research I decided to try take tumeric for the inflammation in my skin, Milk Thistles helps fight off bacteria that causes acne, and Evening Primrose Oil that helps with hormonal imbalance. There are several ways to determine why you have acne or breakouts in certain areas of your face and body so make sure if you are struggling as well to really do research or see your doctor!

Several people have told me to go to a dermatologist again but with my past experiences I’m not too crazy about that option. So I have changed up my diet, no red meat or refined sugar, I haven’t eaten out, so that means no tacos or nuggets in almost three weeks now. That alone has done wonders for my skin. Since my skin is sensitive I have to be careful with what I put on my skin, so I stumbled upon a great brand called Thesis Beauty. I ordered a few products just to try out the brand and they have rescued my skin. The first product I tried was their cold pressed Rosehip oil. Rosehip oil has a lot of wonderful benefits, the antioxidants helped my skin get rid of and prevent blemishes. This oil also has vitamins A and C which are great anti aging properties that help boost your collagen production.

I am a sucker for a good mask so imagine my excitement when I saw they had a mask for oily and blemish prone skin! I was so confused when I opened the package and saw it was a dry mask. Mermaids Cheek smells horrible but works like a charm. It is a seaweed mask and it smells.. well… like seaweed. I was so grossed out at first but when I saw the results I suddenly didn’t care anymore. You do have to mix it in with something, I use lemon juice but you can use any kind of herbal tea or water. The morning after I used this mask I noticed a huge difference in my skin. My skin looked bright and a lot less red, for me thats a big deal! I usually wake up in the morning hating my skin, but I was pretty amazed after just one use! Now I’m using it once a week and still loving it!

Call me a mask-a-holic but I can’t help myself, I also have a love for Herbivore. The blue clay mask was heaven sent I swear.I found it on the detox market website and decided to give it a try. This one came as a dry clay as well so I mix it with lemon juice just like Mermaids Cheek. I. choose to use lemon juice because it brightens the skin and also fights off bacteria in the skin to prevent breakouts. But again you can use water or herbal tea. The Blue Clay mask detoxes the skin and fights off acne as well, it also has rose oil in it that helps reduce redness after you rinse it off. It detoxes the pores and pulls out impurities while keeping your skin hydrated. I don’t feel like it stripped my skin of the oils I need and my skin feels so soft and smooth afterwards.

Thesis also has a cold pressed rose hip oil that I’ve been using morning and night for about a month now. Even though I’m oily I love to use oils on my skin because oil helps keep your skin balanced and it also absorbs other oils. Rosehip oil is great for dehydrated skin, it also has vitamin A which is a natural retinoid which has great anti aging benefits. I do one pump of oil and press it and massage it into my skin. I know what you’re thinking… “Melanie, you’re 22 why are you thinking about anti aging?” You should start using anti-aging products before the aging of your skin progresses, think about it, aging skin is easier to prevent than to reverse.

One more trick that I’ve learned is to use raw local honey on your skin as a treatment mask. I was telling someone about my skin struggle and she was like “Girl you need to go get some local honey and use it on your skin, it works wonders!” I took her advice ran to the grocery store and picked up Nature Nates Raw and Unfiltered honey, y’all… I am in love with this trick! Honey is a natural microbial, antibacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-inflammatory and so much more! After using it on my skin one time I noticed a massive difference in my skin, the redness was almost all gone, my skin wasn’t irritated, and it felt smooth.

My skin is sensitive, acne prone, and extremely oily, skin health is so important to me so I am always on the look out for products that are going to help my skin but won’t be harmful.
