Travel Essentials

A few weeks ago we went to Lake Charles Louisiana to visit our friend Jay Lowder and hear him preach at a church in that area. As I was packing my backpack I was thinking about the beauty products I would be taking with me. So here’s what I brought along!

When I’m traveling I like to have multi purpose products in my makeup bag. I find that if I carry single purpose products something gets lost or it just gets to crowded. My Real Techniques sponge always makes it into my makeup bag for foundation and Concealer. I choose this one over my beauty blender because of its density I feel like I use less product.

Usually I don’t use a super mattifying foundation however I don’t like traveling with my Laura Mercier  setting Powder because it is WAY too messy. So I usually choose a Matte foundation to travel with. I like the maybeline fit me Matte + Poreless Foundation because I never have to do touch ups.

The Anastasia contour kit is PERFECT for traveling because the packaging is small and easy to carry around. It also has the best Bronzing, contour, and highlight colors for daytime and evening.

My go to traveling  brush is the Mr. Right by Toofaced. It has a bow tie, you read correctly, a bow tie. It’s super cute but if you move the bow tie up, to make the brush more dense and you can use it for Blush, contour, and highlight.

For eyeshadow I take my Urban Decay Ultimate Basics palette. All of the colors are Matte and I have all the colors I need for a day time or nighttime look.

These are the products that always make the cut into my travel makeup bag. Everything else kind of varys on what formulas I’m loving or if I get new brushes or something. If you’re going on a road trip or traveling anywhere be mindful of the activities you’ll be doing and what products will have more than one purpose.

August Favorites

This month I’ve been using basically the same products everyday. I’m excited to share what I’ve been loving this month with you guys. Usually it’s hard for me to stick to one product for an entire month because I like to switch it up a bit. But this month I’ve really been paying attention to what I use and how often.

Skincare first of course!

The first product on my list is the Tatcha Pure One Step Camellia Cleansing Oil. Even though I’m oily I really like cleansing oils to remove my makeup. This cleansing oil gently melts away makeup (waterproof as well) and impurities from the skin leaving it soft and clean. I really like that it is light and thin unlike others that I’ve tried out in the past.

The Body Shop Tea Tree Skin Clearing  Clay Mask is my favorite mask right now. Tea Tree Oil is an oil used to help deep clean and kill bacteria in the skin. YES PLEASE! My skin is very problematic and oily. This green cooling mask is everything I have ever wanted in a skin care product. If you only have problems in certain areas you can also use this mask as a spot treatment.

Before foundation I have been using the Benefit Porefessional primer. This primer fills in pores and creates a very smooth surface for your foundation. It helps to mask the texture on my skin and keeps my foundation on longer than expected.

We all have our go to foundations, this month mine has been the Dior Airflash Spray Foundation. WOW. If you have never tried this beauty, it is worth the trip to Sephora or a counter. I have never used such a flawless foundation in my life. The weartime is phenomenal and it stays smooth all day long. Don’t let the spray packaging scare you, just spray it on a dense foundation brush and apply on your skin. You will not be disappointed!

Tarte Shape Tape concealer (Exclusive to Ulta) has made a huge dent in the beauty world with its amazing coverage, blendability, and of course the versatility with shades. I love this gel concealer, the consistency is wonderful, it covers every imperfection, and doesn’t crease under my eyes.

Kat Von D has made such a great name for her brand. But her setting spray has worked wonders for my makeup game this month. It has cucumber in the formula to keep the skin looking nice and fresh. The hydrating formula allows your makeup to set without looking dry and also adds a wear time of 24 hours to my makeup.

Those of us who are oily understand the importance of a good setting powder. I stumbled upon the Makeup Forever Super Matte Loose Powder, I was skeptical at first but gave it a shot and I’m so glad I did. I’m not usually one to use a ton of powder on my skin because I still like to look hydrated. So the word “Super Matte” scared me a bit. I wore it once and I was hooked, it is extremely smooth and flawless, blurs imperfections, and sets foundation better than any other setting powder I’ve ever used.

Tarte blushes don’t look like much when you open them. They look dull in color until you apply them. Sephora’s birthday gift this year offers the Tarte blush Paaarty and a lip color. The blush is a beautiful soft pink that adds a bit of color to your cheeks and is perfect for everyday makeup looks.

Now lets talk about eyes!

If you’ve read my last post or follow me on Instagram you know I have been LOVING the Anastasia Beverly Hills Subculture Palette. The colors and pigment are amazing and you can create soft everyday looks and sexy bold smokey looks as well. You do however need to know that you have to place the color where you want it and then blend it out.

Another Kat Von D product that I have loved from the beginning of Kat Von D makeup time is the Tattoo Liner in Trooper. Trooper is well,  a trooper! It stays put all day long, doesn’t smear, move, or disappoint me in any way. This is THE DARKEST LINER EVER.

A lot of people don’t see the hype of mascara and some think that they are all the same. I’ve been grabbing for my Urban Decay Perversion Mascara more than anything recently. I love that it is just enough length and volume while it holds my lashes’ natural curl. I don’t have a problem with smearing or smudging throughout the day, my days are usually about 14 hours long.

What products have you been loving this month?

Subculture Palette Review

  • We’ve all seen the negative reviews and videos on the Anastasia Beverly Hills Subculture Palette. If you follow me on Instagram you already know how much I ADORE this palette! I’ve used it non stop since I’ve purchased it and fell in love at first swatch! While reading reviews and watching YouTube videos I took mental notes on the possible user errors that could be happening.

My first thought was, what Primer did they use?
I went back to the negative videos and watched as they used the thickest concealer they could find as a primer. The next question that popped in my head was “what is their technique like?” So I watched again as they use a blending brush and immediately start blending it back and forth in the crease.

I’m sure you’ve all heard of primer for your face but maybe you haven’t heard of primers for your eyeshadow. I like the Too Faced Shadow Insurance because it prevents your eyeshadow from creasing and is not oily at all. Another thing to consider is that this is an artistry palette, the shadows are meant to place and then blend. I used a small dense brush, the number 18 from Sephora Collection  to place and the number 19 from Sephora Collection to blend the outer edges. These colors are gorgeous for all seasons and all occasions.

What’s in My Empties Box

Being the product lover that I am, I rarely finish a product before moving on to a different one. When I do finish something, you know it either had to be good or I was testing out the full effect. Some of these I really liked others not so much.

The first products I’m going to talk about are skincare products. I didn’t have any cleansers to mention but I do want to talk about the Martian Toner from Sunday Riley. The packaging allows you to pump the product instead of tip the bottle over on a cotton round. I use half a pump in dry hands and pat it into my skin. I love the feel and smell of this toner, it mattifies, clarifies, tightens, and clears out pores! This toner gets 5 stars from me!

Drunk Elephant has won over my skin with the  TLC Framboos Glycolic Night Serum! I love anything with glycolic acid in it because of my oily and problematic skin. The AHA’s and BHA’s in this serum deliver a perfect chemical exfoliation without irritating the skin. It also targets signs of aging, discoloration, pores, excess oil, and dry skin all in one product!

IT Cosmetics Confidence in a Cream is a moisturizer EVERYONE needs to try. IT prides itself on working with plastic surgeons to create the products perfect for everyone. It’s ability to prevent texture, blur imperfections and deeply hydrate are phenomenal. The lightweight feel is perfect under makeup as well!

Shesiedo Bio Performance LiftDynamic Eye Cream wasn’t my favorite. I used it for about 3 months until the bottle was completely empty and I just didn’t notice a difference at all. It’s supposed to be lifting and sculpting around the eye area, and I just didn’t see a difference with this product.

Anytime I have a client needing a recommendation for a makeup remover I always turn to IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Makeup! It is a makeup melter so it is oil based but doesn’t leave an oily film on the skin after you remove it. What I like is that it is gentle enough to remove eye makeup without burning or leaving a film on my eyes. Bye Bye makeup removes all impurities from my skin without scrubbing or toners and leaves my skin soft and smooth.

I told you about one eye cream I wasn’t fond of but I did try one that I really really liked and will be repurchasing! IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Undereye changed my undereye life!  You name it does it. It hydrates, reduces fine lines, depuffs, and brightens dramatically. Normally you need to give a product about two weeks before seeing a difference in your skin, however I noticed a difference within days.

The last skincare product I am going to tell you about is the Sephora Collection Mud Mask Purifying & Mattifying. If you have oily and problematic skin you will adore this mask! I was a bit skeptical at first because it’s only $20 but I am EXTREMELY impressed with this product! It absorbs oil, sebum, reduces pore size, and reduces blemishes with Zinc, Copper, and white clay. When your skin needs a detox or just a spot treatmeant head over to Sephora and pick this guy up, you will not regret it!

Hair:

I only have two hair products I’m going to talk about and the first one is the HASK Argan from Morocco Dry Shampoo. I’m that girl who lives off of dry shampoo four days out of the week. Honestly I don’t like spending $25 on a dry shampoo so I get mine from Walgreens for $7.99 and the can is bigger than most others. It absorbs oil with rice starch, freshens hair without phthates and artificial color.

My hair is usually straight as a board unless I style it before blow drying. Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray is my go to if I don’t want to curl my hair but I still want a nice windswept style. I use this on my hair when its wet then blow dry it and I’m good to go all day long.

Brows

Of course the iconic Anastasia Beverly Hills Dip Brow and Brow Wiz made into my empties box! The Dip Brow was perfect when I was growing out certain areas of my eye brows because it gave the illusion that I had full brows. I love the waterproof formula and the wear time is perfect for this Houston weather!

Brow Wiz is my current brow product so I did repurchase it. I like more of a natural brow, so this thin pencil is perfect for creating the illusion of brow hair. I have pretty full brows so I don’t need a lot, I usually fill in lightly then add a tinted brow gel on top of it.

Complexion

The complexion products that made it to the empties box are mostly foundations. First is the Becca Evermatte Foundation, this one stole my heart from the very first use. It’s comfortable on the skin, full coverage, doesn’t clog pores and is formulated with Becca’s Evermatte Technology. This Technology mattifies the skin without drying out your skin, it stays on all day, and doesn’t melt in the heat!

Givenchy is also a brand who knew what they were doing when creating foundation! They are smart foundations, I know what you’re thinking… “What in the world is a smart foundation?” It has a technology that mattifies where your oily and hydrates when you’re dry. I love the feel and wear time  of the Teint Couture foundation, it’s lightweight, last all day, and doesn’t make me look oily or dry all day long.

Cover FX Custom Cover Drops is a product I think I need to try again. This product is best used by mixing it into a moisturizer of your choice. It’s basicly pigment in a bottle. If you use it alone it will be WAY too heavy on your skin and get cakey. Cover FX is considered a vegan brand, it is gluten, fragrance, mineral oil, talc, and paraban free. It doesn’t clog pores and is wonderful if you have sensitive skin.

Laura Mercier Candle Glow foundation is great if you’re a little more dry and don’t want full coverage. I like this for my “No makeup look” because all it does is even out the skin tone without heavy coverage and gives a really beautiful glow.

Another Laura Mercier product that made my empties box is the iconic Translucent powder. Some use it for baking under the eye but when I use this powder on ANY foundation it increases the weartime by far!

Bobbi Brown Cream Color Corrector is my go to corrector that I can’t seem to get away from. The warm tone corrects my undereye area so well that I just can’t get enough of it. Everytime I run out of it, I have to repurchase it there is just nothing like it!

Sephora Collection has correctors as well. I finished up my yellow one but I didn’t care for it too much. It didn’t seem to correct much of anything and I just ended up mixing it with concealer to make them brighter. It wasn’t horrible, it just wasn’t what I needed.

Every time I finish a product I will be putting it in a box under my vanity and when it gets full I will write a post about them. Stay tuned for the next round of empties!

For the love of NARS

When you see or hear about NARS products what do you think of? I think of individuality because there is something for everyone. If you like bold colors they have it; if you like natural makeup it’s there. Artist and Photographer Francois Nars created twelve lipsticks, and from there, an entire line of makeup was born. NARS believes that skin is beautiful and that women should shine through the makeup. Meaning, be yourself and don’t let the makeup define you, you define the makeup.

“Skin is the most important part of makeup. It reveals your appeal.” -Francois Nars

The first product I ever purchased from NARS was the Albatross highlighter. Its golden sheen is the perfect glow for the cheeks, nose, and even eyes.

I have tried all of the complexion products and my go to’s are the Velvet Matte Skin Tint and the Radiant Tinted Moisturizer. The velvet matte works best for me because I am pretty oily and it doesn’t accentuate any texture. The Radiant Tinted Moisturizer is great for my more natural days when I don’t want to look like I have makeup on. It evens out the skin tone really well and has a nice glowy finish.

Everyone knows about the iconic Creamy Radiant Concealer. It seems to be everyone’s holy grail concealer. It was mine too until they came out with the Soft Matte Complete Concealer. I was skeptical at first because Matte concealer under the eyes just doesn’t make sense because matte products accentuate texture. Not this one. I tried it out for a few weeks and I loved the wear time and the formula. It stays soft, smooth and covers without a color corrector underneath.

If you have ever tried NARS Orgasm color products you know exactly why it has been a best seller for 20 years. The warm, peachy, golden color is beautiful for all seasons. The blush and gloss go hand in hand with each other and add the perfect flush to the skin.

Personally, I am a bronzer fan and one of my go to’s is Laguna Liquid Bronzer. I apply it with a damp beauty blender under my cheek bones and on my forehead for nice sun kissed skin.

One more product from NARS that I adore is the Velvet Lip Glide. This product is so creamy and smooth and long wearing. It is a shiny finish and it smells like cupcakes! The color I have is a Le Palace, which is a beautiful old Hollywood red shade.

I am very passionate about NARS and all the work that goes into every product. NARS is an iconic brand that a lot of people have grown to love over the years. If you haven’t tried any of these products I highly recommend giving them a shot. I don’t think you will be disappointed!

On to makeup!

The three face products I liked the most were all from Maybelline’s Fit Me line. Maybelline Fit Me Matte + Poreless foundation worked beautifully on my skin it stayed on all day and looked flawless while controlling my oil. Personally, I don’t like to reapply products throughout the day so if it doesn’t last I don’t repurchase and I have almost completely finished this bottle and will be repurchasing. It didn’t cause breakouts, my pore size was significantly smaller, it smoothed out my texture, and it controlled my oil! My only complaint is that I wish it had a pump.

PRICE: $7.99

Concealer is a must have for me because my dark circles are awful without it! I don’t apply foundation under my eyes because it is heavy and causes creasing. Maybelline Fit Me concealer has the warm tones I need to correct my under eye area and has wonderful coverage without the creasing. The formula is comfortable, weightless, and long lasting.

Price: $6.99

Typically I only use powder in my most oily areas because even though I am oily, I don’t really care for a super matte finish. Maybelline Fit Me powder is smooth and perfect for my oily T-Zone. I set my nose and forehead and I am good to go for the rest of the day! I also used it all over just so I could let others know how it worked out and I give it two thumbs up! It’s not cakey at all, it stayed smooth even as my skin got oily throughout the day, and the wear time is great!

Price: $7.99

I’m not much of a contour girl but I did purchase the Wet N Wild contour duo. It looks a lot like the Marc Jacobs duo but warmer. Just keep in mind that a little goes a long way, it got a little muddy on my skin but after using a fluffier brush it was smooth. Now if you are a contour queen, use a more tapered brush to achieve the perfect face shape. I liked that it was matte and not glittery or shimmery because you can go for bronze or contour with this duo. The highlight is more like a banana powder so I used it to set my under eye and it kept my concealer in place with minimal creasing.

Since I am not much of a matte girl I tend to go for a nice shimmery highlight. I purchased the Wet N Wild MegaGlo Highlighter in 321B light. I LOVE this highlighter! It complimented my skin tone well, I didn’t need a whole lot to achieve the look I was going for, and it wasn’t a glittery mess! It glided right on my skin without a problem, the wear time was phenomenal, and I was glowing all day long. You can even double it as an eyeshadow if you want to. I’m a sucker for a good highlight!

Price: $4.99

Don’t forget the blush! Maybelline Fit Me blushes are a hit or miss. I grabbed three different shades and only really cared for the deeper tone I purchased. The color pay off of the deeper tone was so much better than the pink and peach I got. It added just enough color without being too red or patchy I like to look a little flushed but not like I just ran three miles.

Price $5.99

We all know how important brows are so, of course, I found a great deal on a brow kit from Essence Cosmetics (product purchased at Ulta). The kit comes with mini tweezers, a mini brush, three brow colors, and highlight for the brow bone. I use the dark brown on the tail of my brow and where my brow hair is sparse. I mix the middle shade and the lightest brow shade to fill in and line my brows for a more natural brow. If you don’t think you would use all three colors like that another way to look at this kit is by hair color. Do you change your hair color often? If you answered yes then this product is perfect because you have the shades you need to create a natural brow.

Price: $9:99

Eyeshadow is my favorite… So choosing a palette that I really liked at a great price was a little difficult until I found the Makeup Revolution section at Ulta. Then I had a hard time choosing which one I wanted. I ended up getting the Run Boy Run Salvation Palette with matte and shimmer shades. I like to have balanced palettes, and that is exactly what this is. It has six matte shades perfect for transition and smokey and then twelve shimmers that are warm and cool. At the time there wasn’t a tester available for me to swatch, but when I got home to test it out, I fell in love. The pigment is perfect, no fallout, and not patchy at all!

Price: $10.00

With shadow we need a good liner right? I picked up the Essence Cosmetics 2-in-1 Eyeliner Pen. One side is a more precise felt tip for wings or tight lining while the other side is thicker for a bolder line. It was very easy to use and I didn’t notice any fading throughout the day.

Price: $3.49

To complete the eyes we need a mascara to lift and thicken our lashes! I chose Essence Cosmetics Get BIG mascara because it is super dark and the fiber brush is created to add volume and density to the lashes. I tested this one out for a week and a half and I didn’t notice any clumps, fall out, or transfer. It gave my lashes just enough volume and length without weighing down my eye lashes.

Price: $3.99

Last but certainly not least is an NYX lip liner that I have been using as a lip color alone. Its smooth matte formula is comfortable and lasts all day without drying out the lips. I chose the color soft spoken because it goes with everything and I am loving it!

Price $3.99

For an entire face of makeup, I was able to spend a little over $62, which isn’t bad if you look at the products that are on the market. Not to mention the deals you get from the rewards cards and coupons you could spend less than that. So next time you are at Walgreens or Ulta take a look at the deals they have available and execute a plan. What do I need now? What can wait? And what do I want? Make a list and mark a few items off each time, remember you don’t have to spend it all at once. Get what’s missing first, then add on later.

Let’s get skintimate!

Working in the beauty industry has taught me a lot about skincare and why it’s important to take care of your skin. Before we jump into products, let me introduce you to your skin.

Your skin has three layers:
The subcutaneous tissue that contains fat cells to insulate your body,
The dermis that contains connective tissue, and
The epidermis that protects the inner layers from environmental damage.

The cells in your epidermis get thinner over time because you lose collagen which causes your skin to lose its elasticity and creates wrinkles. Collagen strengthens the skin, helps with elasticity, and also helps replace dead skin cells. As we age, our sweat glands also decrease causing our skin to get drier. UVA and UVB radiation thin your epidermis by breaking down the collagen in your skin. So apply that sunscreen! SPF 15 is a good start if you’re just running around town, but if you’re going to be outside for long periods of time try using SPF 30. Check out the products that changed the game for my skincare routine!

Step 1: Cleanse

When choosing your skin care it is important to know your skin type. Are you oily, dry, combination? Are you sensitive? What are you wanting your products to do for you? Cleansing your skin in the morning and at night is an important step. It removes excess dirt and oil from your skin that potentially clogs pores and causes breakouts. Some cleansers can strip your skin of the natural oils you need to stay hydrated, so be on the look out for ingredients. Some cleansers have Vitamin E in them, which helps fight free radical damage. Free radicals are environmental hazards to the skin, like pollution or sun damage that cause us to lose elasticity in our skin. We all have our go-to brands for one reason or another, the brands I personally gravitate towards are Korres, Ole Henriksen, Fresh, and Boscia.

Korres’ Greek Yoghurt Cleanser is wonderful for dry skin and redness. It gently cleanses the skin with… you guessed it, Greek yogurt! It also removes makeup, nourishes the skin, and soothes with ingredients like amaranth seed extract (soothing) and honeysuckle for anti bacterial benefits.

Ole Henriksen calls his Truth Cleanser “Happiness in a bottle.” It is perfect for all skin types whose main concern is dullness and uneven texture. The orange extract in this product evens your skin tone and leaves your skin feeling refreshed and glowing!

The Fresh Umbrian Clay line is amazing for those who have problematic and oily skin. It minimizes pores, controls oil, and gets rid of blemishes. Sandalwood purifies the skin, chamomile flower and lavender water soothe the skin, leaving it comfortable and squeaky clean!

Boscia has a detoxifying black cleanser that heats as you massage it into your skin. This line is great for all skin types whose main focus is to detox the skin and pull out all the impurities. It reduces pore size with artichoke leaf extract, detoxes with activated charcoal, and brightens with vitamin C and P.

Step 2: Exfoliate

Exfoliating removes the dry, dead cells from the surface of your skin allowing your other products to work more efficiently. If you apply a treatment or moisturizer on dead skin cells you aren’t reaping the benefits from them because they are sitting right on top instead of soaking into the skin. You only need to exfoliate once or twice a week, don’t over do it or you will dry out and irritate your skin. There are two exfoliating products that I really like, they are the Peter Thomas Roth Firmx Peeling Gel and the Ole Henriksen Pore Balance Facial Sauna Scrub.

Firmx from PTR is enzymatic. Watch as it visibly attaches itself to your dry skin and lifts and rolls away those dead skin cells!

Ole Henriksen Pore Balance Facial Sauna Scrub is a physical exfoliator, meaning it is a little gritty. It warms and cools to refine the pores and contains lactic and glycolic acid to purify and absorb excess oil.

Step 3: Treat

Treatments are more potent than cleansers and they target specific skincare concerns like dryness, texture, acne, pores, and anti aging. Adding a treatment into my daily routine really changed the game. I really liked the products I had been using but I felt like I just needed an extra boost! Once I added something for my texture and breakouts I felt complete. Treatments really make a huge difference in your routine because you’re able to see results quicker than before. Introduce your skin to one of these treatments and watch your skin do exactly what you want it to!

Ole Henriksen has a product called the Power Peel. He created it for his celebrity clients to have an on-the-go professional facial when they travel. This peel is amazing for dullness and texture, it has three steps.

Polish: Step one is an almond facial scrub that exfoliates the skin to prep it for the peel. It is formulated with almond and bamboo extracts and oat kernel.

Peel: Step two is the Instant Transformation Lemon Facial Peel. It helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and also brightens the skin with orange/lemon extract. and glycolic/lactic acids.

Smooth: Step three is the chamomile comfort mask that helps to soothe your skin after the peel.

Glamglow Powermud is a dual cleanse mask that targets texture, dullness, and oil. It’s a mud – oil mask that deep cleans the skin to smooth and get rid of any impurities left in the skin. I know what you’re thinking… “How can an oil help with oily skin?” Oil attracts oil and absorbs the grease and makeup without stripping your skin of the natural oils it needs.

Drunk Elephant B-Hydra Intensive Gel targets dullness and dryness, Vitamin B-5 and pineapple hydrate the skin while watermelon rind, apple, and lentil reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Just when you thought you couldn’t get enough of this baby, it also fights free radicals with powerful antioxidants!

Last but certainly not least… Moisturizers!

If you’re oily you might cringe at the thought of using a moisturizer, I am here to tell you that you need it and your skin will love you for it. Moisture and oil are very different. If you aren’t using a moisturizer you are dehydrating your skin and if you feel you are oily all over, your skin is overcompensating oil for the lack of moisture. When you find a moisturizer that works for you, your skin will become more balanced and will be less oily and more healthy. The moisturizer I am going to introduce you to first is, of course, an Ole Henriksen product called Counter Balance Oil Control Hydrator. This product balances the skin, controls oil, diminishes the appearance of pores and even helps the longevity of your makeup!

Glamglow Glowstarter Mega Illuminating Moisturizer has iridescent pearl particles that enhance the glow of your complexion. This moisturizer targets dryness and dullness and is formulated with botanicals, vitamins, green tea, jojoba oil and other ingredients to keep your complexion in tip top shape.

Fresh Lotus Youth Preserve Face Cream with Super 7 Complex has been proven to prevent signs of aging. This moisturizer targets loss of elasticity, dryness, and fine lines/wrinkles. Anytime is a good time to start using anti aging products, it is way easier to prevent physical signs of aging than it is to correct it.

All of these products have made an impact on my skins clarity, texture, and overall skin health. I have tried tons of products that were just not for me, but these have worked miracles. I have always struggled with skin issues and have tried all sorts of medications from dermatologists, but once I really started looking into skin care products that suited my concerns I found a regimen that I really adore that seemed to work better than anything I had ever tried. I am always on the look out for new products that will work out for my stubborn, oily, and problematic skin. I hope this helps you create the perfect routine for your skin type and concerns.

My summer makeup routine

Summer is all about light, fresh, bronze skin, and maybe light and peachy eye shadow. The Houston summer heat and humidity are makeup’s worst enemy. It seems like every primer, powder, and setting spray are failing you, and by the end of the day, you look like you’ve drowned in your own sweat. Mascara and eyeliner leave trails under your eyes, foundation and carefully placed contour are non-existent. All that time and effort (not to mention money) are wasted. Now what?

First things first, figure out a good skincare regimen that works for your skin type and concerns. Skincare is the key to flawless makeup application. Keep in mind that it’s summer time, less is more and skin is sexy.

I am a combination oily girl with problematic skin. However, I really like a fresh face, – not so matte when it comes to my foundation. But because I am so oily in certain areas it was hard for me to keep my makeup from fading on my nose and forehead until I started trying different formulas.

The primer I grab for is the Milk makeup blur stick. It is the perfect first step in my routine because it absorbs oil, blurs out any imperfections, and keeps my makeup on all day!

There are two under eye products that I just cannot work without, the Bobbi Brown under eye corrector in peach and Too Faced Born This Way concealer. The corrector neutralizes the purple circles under my eyes and the concealer is hydrating, brightening, and doesn’t crease at all!

On to foundation! Again, I have two because the Houston weather is so unpredictable. When it’s hot and humid I use the Lancome Teint Idole 24 hour foundation. It’s a medium to buildable coverage, I only use one pump and that gives me all the coverage I want and need. The other one I use is the Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation with SPF 15. Its sheer coverage gives me a nice skin finish instead of a made up look.

For a powder, I use the Kat Von D Lock It setting powder just to set the areas I get oily. I lightly brush my nose and forehead since these are my oily areas and tend to fade the fastest.

Blush and Bronzer can complete a look instantly. I usually don’t contour I just like a nice wash of color on my cheeks. Too Faced is notorious for their bronzers because there is something for everyone! Their newest bronzer in Sweet Tea has been my go to all summer because it’s formula is really smooth not to mention the color is beautiful. It’s split into two different sides, one side is lighter than the other so one color could be a highlight if you want. Personally, I like to mix it all together as one color and pop it on my cheek area. If you’re a Beauty Insider at Sephora you already know about the free birthday gift you get every year. This year one of the gifts is a Tarte blush and lip color, the blush is gorgeous! I pop a little bit of that perfect pink shade on the apples of my cheeks and call it a day!

What would a summer makeup look be without that glow? Becca’s liquid Shimmering Skin Perfector in the color Moonstone is great if you like a glow without the powdery look. I place it on my cheek bones, bridge of the nose, cupids bow, and even my brow bone! A little bit adds so much to your entire summer time look!

Too Faced has a new palette which I am sure we have all seen, the Sweet Peach Palette and I must say, it is my holy grail for warm shadows. It has all the warm tones I need and some bold purples and greens as well for bolder night time looks. I am a HUGE fan of this palette for many reasons. I can do subtle looks with light washes of color or dark bold looks when I’m feeling a little more daring. You can also bronze and blush with some of the shades!

We can’t forget the lips! As much as I like a matte lip, I adore a glossy kissable lip with Anastasia Beverly Hills lip gloss in Parfait! It is the perfect peachy golden tone for summer! The wear time is incredible, I don’t have to reapply often believe it or not!

Last but DEFINITELY not least is the Marc Jacobs Coconut setting spray. This setting spray not only smells delish, but it adds that finishing touch every summertime look needs. Hold down the button all the way, release the mist and be amazed. It leaves your skin looking and feeling so fresh.
